In Case You Missed It...

Engaging Millennials | January 23

Women of Water members and guests gathered last week to take a dive into generational diversity.  The engaging presentation by Jason Allen spurred a number of discussions both during and after regarding some key takeaways.

• To be a good leader, you must first be a good follower.
• Empathy at work is important and is not weakness.
• Millennial impatience is often misidentified as entitlement.
• Failed parenting strategies play into many of the issues that older generations dislike about millennials.  (Takeaways for parents: avoid the "instant gratification" trap and "fixing" everything for our kids; let kids do things on their own, even with the risk of failure; and encourage social interaction over digital interactions.)
• Cell phones cause the same stimulus as drugs/pornography/gambling, making cell phone addition a real issue.
• Generations focus differently on problems - Baby Boomers focus on WHAT to do, Gen Xers focus on HOW to do it, and millennials focus on WHY we do it.  This understanding of focus can help us.

We thank Jason for his presentation and helping us to gain a better understanding of the different generations we work and interact with every day.

Don't miss our next event!  Details soon to come...
